It’s essential that wellbeing-related activities, whether they aim to reduce mental ill-health or boost mental health and wellbeing, use an evidence-based. Well-intentioned people often believe that simple actions will make anyone feel good, for example, a gratitude exercise like ‘counting your blessing‘. But actually, this isn’t so. Research has found that people experiencing post-traumatic stress or significant trauma can be adversely affected by practicing gratitude. Just because it appears low impact and positive, it may not be helpful. This is just one example of how applying wellbeing related concepts can be mistakenly used, sometimes with unfavourable consequences.

There is also the free fruit, fitness, and flu jab approach, which is often seen as a ‘go to’ strategy to support staff wellbeing. While this can be an admirable start, we can do so much more to help people live happy, healthy and productive lives, and at relatively little cost. Theory, research findings and journal articles can be a lot to digest, so let me do that for you.
