Wellbeing, what is it?
What is Wellbeing?
Wellbeing is a multifaceted concept—both universal and deeply personal. There is no singular definition or experience of wellbeing; it is unique to each individual and can take many forms.
For some, wellbeing is about feeling good and functioning well, while for others, it may involve overcoming periods of stress or struggle. Wellbeing exists on a spectrum, from flourishing—where you feel happy, healthy, and productive—to languishing, where you might feel overwhelmed or less capable in daily life.
A wide range of factors influence our wellbeing: our genetics, life circumstances, and the environment we inhabit. While everyone defines and experiences wellbeing differently, research shows that those who report high levels of wellbeing often describe feeling happier, healthier, more productive, and more connected to others. These are qualities most of us aspire to, and they are things we all deserve.
However, wellbeing is not a constant state. Life is full of challenges, and our sense of wellbeing naturally ebbs and flows. During difficult times, having a strong foundation of energy, knowledge, skills, and healthy relationships can make all the difference in navigating life’s ups and downs.
The good news? There is growing consensus around the key elements that support wellbeing—and understanding these can help us identify what’s working well in our lives and where we may need more focus or support. By growing awareness of our wellbeing, we can take intentional steps to nurture it, even in the face of life’s challenges.
Introducing The Model of Elemental Wellbeing (MEW), a comprehensive, holistic wellbeing model developed through an extensive research study combining lay and academic wellbeing knowledge.
Constructed by two interwoven aspects of wellbeing, The Elements and The Golden threads, each working together yet unique and influential in their own right. Let’s explore a little deeper.
-
- The elements are the core components of wellbeing. They each stand alone as essential features but together form a holistic picture of wellbeing.
- The golden threads are the unifying principles, influencing and bringing all the elements to life. Depending on how the threads are functioning will determine if they thwart and support your wellbeing. Some of the threads are within your control, yet others are influenced heavily by the environment in which you live.
Like the chain on a bike, the wheels (the elements) are bought into action by the chain (the golden threads), and if the chain is running smoothly, so will one’s wellbeing. If the chain is damaged or a bit stuck and in need of some oil, it does not run smoothly, and this is the same for one’s sense of wellbeing; it may well be feeling a bit rough.
